Writing music is one of the most self-rewarding processes that an artist can experience. This is why it is very important for a musician to know how to translate the sounds they hear in their head into a medium that can be shared with the world. This is where a producer comes in. Your song might be great on paper, but if its recording and arrangement are mediocre, then you risk losing your listeners before you get your idea accross.
"If you had a sign above every studio door saying, 'This Studio is a Musical Instrument,' it would make such a different approach to recording." – Brian Eno
Learning music production will help you better understand how songs and sound landscapes are built from the ground up.
What works best for your song?
It is very easy for an artist to get caught up in the details and fall into the overproducing slippery slope. Be sure to take a step back and really listen to your track. Then compare it to similar music as a reference, but without forgetting your own vision. That synth might sound fantastic on your favorite song, but may not benefit your own production. Sometimes just an acoustic piano and some hard hitting vocals will do. Do you actually need that extra shaker or a compressor on your vocals? What about EQ-ing the guitars? How much reverb is enough? Maybe none. Be inspired without losing yourself. Play your track in the car, on your phone, to your parents, to your friends... Take notes and most importantly have fun!
