What makes a great song?

Awesome lyrics that make you want to shout at the top of your lungs? That soaring chord progression? The intrumental hook that keeps you... well... Hooked?

All of the above? Sure! But maybe not. There are so many reasons why a song remains with us all our lives and becomes part of our routines. Maybe you feel that the songwriter took the words right out of your mouth. Maybe you just had the best day of your life and that random track suddenly came on, forever associating itself with that particular experience.

Whatever the reason, good songwriting creates a connection between the writer and the listener that transcends the physical and personal bond. We also feel what the artist felt, empathize and project that experience onto our own. Their pain or joy is ours.

If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. -Albert Einstein

A song is our way as artists to tell our story and express ourselves. Words and chord progressions are the colors that we splash onto a blank canvas until it becomes a representation of the noise haunting our imagination.

A good song doesn't have to be complicated

Actually, some of the most popular songs are based on a simple 3 or 4 chords progression topped with straightforward but heartfelt lyrics. A great rule of thumb while writing a piece is to be sincere. Do not try to emulate someone else. Be you and find your voice! Good hunting! :)
